First 20 minutes from class

Left-Field Bass Overview - Scroll down for an Audio Demo of the project we made in class

In this session, we explore the boundary-pushing world of Left-Field Bass music where sound design meets controlled chaos. You’ll learn how to sculpt unconventional bass tones using Ableton's stock instruments and effects, experiment with rhythm and space, and turn glitchy textures into groove-driven compositions in Ableton Live.

We’ll cover:

  • How to Left-Field Bass – Understand the sonic identity and rhythmic feel that define the genre.
  • Noise/Sustain/Neuro/Wub Bass Sound Design – Craft dynamic, evolving bass layers using modulation and resampling.
  • Sub Drops – Create tension and release with deep low-end energy.
  • Glitch Techniques – Add rhythmic unpredictability through micro-edits and randomization.
  • Resampling Methods – Transform and reprocess sounds into new textures and phrases.
  • Negative Space – Use silence and contrast to make your bass and drums hit harder.
  • Broken Quantization & Micro-Swing – Build groove with intentional timing irregularities.
  • Granular Atmospheres – Design granular progressions for unique intros and breakdowns.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a full toolkit for crafting forward-thinking bass music that feels deep, raw, and unpredictable.

Left-Field Project from Class

The Ableton Live Project we made in class. You can follow along, Save all the tools in the project, remix, edit, and re-use as a template.

16 Instrument Racks

A collection of custom instrument racks for various noise, neuro, sustain, wub and laser production ready bass sounds.

Granular Slicer

A custom Instrument rack using the Granulator III sampler to turn it into a slicing granular sampler which can be a powerful tool to quickly come up with unique progressions.

Expression Control Randomizer

A special MIDI Effect rack to allow for both midi trigger and continues smooth randomization of parameters like rack macros.

Phase Safe Bass Splitter

Using inverted phase frequency splitting to prevent phase changes (that can hurt transients) when splitting sounds to bass and high frequency bands for independent processing.

Synth FX Kit

Included in this session is an Effect Rack inspired by Serum's FX Section. Featuring each effect in Serum's chain but with only stock Ableton Suite 12 Audio Effects.

There are 3 variation presets for a quick sound. This tool is essential for sound design with Ableton's built-in synths as they don't have their own FX sections like many modern plug-in synths.

Break Bus Driver Rack

An exclusive Audio Effect Rack you can use on all your breakbeats tracks and/or Drum groups.

This rack combines saturations, compression, short reverbs, rhythmic delays and transient shaping.

This rack will make your drums sounds fatter and fuller.

Macros:

Drive – Waveshaping distortion from the Drum Buss

Crunch – Mid/High Distortion

GAINNN – Controls the makeup gain of the Glue Compressor before the last stage of Soft and Hard Clipping

Saturate – Analog Drive before final clipping

Room Space – Drums Plate reverb

Groove Echo – Syncopated 1/4 notes for added groove

Tilt Filter – Tilt EQ to adjust the balance of the highs and lows

Comp – Last compressor stage
