In this video we see how to use the Max for Live MIDI envelope effect to get the same side chain effect we get from a compressor but with more control especially over the Side Chain curve. This technique comes to mimic plugins like LFO Tool by Steve Duda and Kickstart by Nicky Romero and Sonic Academy.
To use this trick place the Envelope Max MIDI effect before your kick and Map the Envelope to control the other Track’s volume. In the Envelope turn off the Sustain and start playing with the Attack and Decay. You can also add curves using the sliders underneath each parameter.
If you want to keep control over your mixer drop an Audio effect rack with an empty chain and Map the envelope to control the Chain’s volume. You can also use Max audio effect Multi-Map to map multiple parameters to be controlled by the Envelope side chain trigger.
Check out the video for full demonstration of this technique.
* Bonus Tip: Try to map the Envelope device to an one of the EQ Filter’s gain knobs to do EQ side chaining.
