Glitch Techniques Overview - Scroll down for an audio demo of the project we made in class

In this session, we explore the art of controlled chaos through Glitch Techniques where precision meets unpredictability. You’ll learn how to break, bend, and reshape audio and MIDI into musical expressions of digital imperfection using Ableton Live’s advanced editing, modulation, and randomization tools.

You'll learn:

  • How to Glitch: Discover creative ways to intentionally break sound for texture, tension & added interest
  • Micro Editing: Chop, stretch, Reverse, Scrub and realign audio for glitchy movement and editing techniques
  • Binary Randomization: Introduce algorithmic on/off decisions that create unpredictable FX triggering
  • Triggered Randomization: Build real-time chaos that reacts dynamically to your playing
  • Extreme Modulation: Push LFOs, envelopes, and automation beyond their limits for evolving motion and cross modulation
  • Probability Sequencing: Inject life and variation into patterns using chance-based triggers
  • Distorted Chaos: Use distortion, resampling, and mangling to turn noise into musical grit
  • Instrument Morphing: Blend and warp instruments, tracks, chains & macros to form hybrid, glitchy tones
  • Making it Sound Musical: Balance randomness with harmonic and rhythmic intention to create music out of the glitched chaos

By the end of this workshop, you’ll know how to harness randomness, probability and precision to create beautifully broken grooves that sound human, chaotic, and deeply musical.

Glitch Project from Class

The Project we made during class for you to explore, edit, remix and save all the tools and samples from.

Wavetable Randomizer

An Ableton Project with a complete randomizer rack for Wavetable, Echo and Reverb. Giving you a completely different glitched sound with every note press. You can disabled the randomization with the Macros if you find a sound you like and want to save it as a preset. There is also a custom Max for Live device inside the rack to allow randomization for the parameters inside Wavetable that are not randomizable by Ableton's Modulators.

Binary Beat Repeat

In class we talked about Binary Randomization Techniques (on/off randomization) This rack use this techniques to trigger random stutters with the Beat Repeat.

Auto Glitcher

Taking Binary Randomization to the next level this Audio Effect Rack uses on/off randomization for Beat Repeat, Redux, Shifter, Roar, Phaser, Pedal, Grain Delay Delay and Delay to create a an Auto Glitcher effect (watch your CPU!)

The 1 Lead Preset

A versatile electrified glitch lead sound from my Drift Presets Vol. 1 Pack.

Sub Preset

A super fat Sub instrument rack using Wavetable that is suited for all styles of music.
