Music Theory - Modal Interchange Overview
This 2-hour workshop will introduce you to a modern approach of music composition in Ableton Live.
- The Importance of Music Theory
- Building Blocks of Music:
- Scales: We'll break down the concept of scales and how they form the foundation of melodies and chords.
- Chords: We'll explore how chords are built from scales and understand their role in creating harmony and progression.
- Modern Composition Techniques:
- Modal Interchange: We'll dive into the concept of modal interchange, a technique where chords are borrowed from outside the traditional scale to create unique sounds.
- Composition based on Chords: Instead of focusing on a specific key, you'll learn how to compose melodies and basslines directly based on chord progressions.
- Applying Theory in Ableton Live: Throughout the class, you'll gain practical experience by applying these concepts directly within Ableton Live including the new Live 12 MIDI tools like Stacks, Seed and Shape.
Previous Music Theory Knowledge
While the class starts with the basics, it builds upon existing knowledge. Having some prior music theory understanding will help you grasp the concepts faster, but it's not mandatory.
