Rhythm Theory - Clave Overview

This online Ableton workshop dives deep into the world of Clave rhythms and their use in modern music styles.

Workshop Breakdown:

• Rhythm Theory Fundamentals: We'll start with the basics of rhythm (Beats and Bars, Time signature, BPM/Tempo, Note divisions, Triplets, Syncopation)
• Demystifying Clave: We'll break down the concept of Clave, the foundation and rhythmic key of syncopated based styles.
• Clave Foundation: Learn how to program core Clave rhythms in Ableton (Project Included).
• Going Beyond: How to go beyond the core clave rhythms.
• Sound Selection: Discover the type of drum sounds to complement your Clave rhythms (Drum Rack Included).
• Humanizing Your Beats: How to use Ableton's Groove Engine and New Humanization Tools to enhance your beats.
• Genre Inspiration: Dive into how Clave shapes the groove in Afrobeats, Dancehall, Reggaeton, and Baile Funk.
• Mixing Clave: Learn essential mixing techniques to make your Clave drums.
• Beyond the Styles: We'll explore how the concept of Clave can inspire the creation of entirely new musical styles.

Previous Music Theory Knowledge

This class is beginner friendly and goes over the fundamentals of rhythms before diving into Clave concepts!

Clave Ableton Project

Included with this session is a custom Drum Rack loaded with clave inspired sounds we used in class as well as a collection of MIDI clips with various Clave patterns.

Instant Afro

Based on the classic Instant Haus, This Max for Live rhythm generator allows you to easily create Clave inspired rhythms.

Simply load a Drum Rack after Instant Afro and hit play! Then play with the patterns (or map them to MIDI!) or hit randomize!

Break Bus Driver

An exclusive Audio Effect Rack you can use on all your breakbeats tracks and/or Drum groups.

This rack combines saturations, compression, short reverbs, rhythmic delays and transient shaping.

This rack will make your drums sounds fatter and fuller.

Macros:

Drive – Waveshaping distortion from the Drum Buss

Crunch – Mid/High Distortion

GAINNN – Controls the makeup gain of the Glue Compressor before the last stage of Soft and Hard Clipping

Saturate – Analog Drive before final clipping

Room Space – Drums Plate reverb

Groove Echo – Syncopated 1/4 notes for added groove

Tilt Filter – Tilt EQ to adjust the balance of the highs and lows

Comp – Last compressor stage
