In this session we explore the world of Botanica — an enchanting and experimental sound design style rooted in nature-inspired textures, Studio Ghibli-style harmony, and glitchy magic. In this session, you’ll learn to sculpt delicate, emotional electroacoustic music using Ableton Live.

We’ll cover:

• How to Botanica – Learn the foundations of the Botanica (Petalcore) aesthetic, from compositional approach to vertical arrangement ideas that breathes.

• Studio Ghibli Style Chords – Craft lush, melancholic progressions using jazz-influenced voicings and pentatonic melodic movements for emotional depth.

• Granular Glitching – Create organic stutters, blooming textures, and subtle rhythmic chaos with granular tools.

• Codec Degrading – Embrace sonic imperfection by using audio compression artifacts and bit-level distortion for texture and mood.

• Spectral Sparkles – Add shimmering accents using spectral delays and frequency splitting for sparkling, airy details.

• Swells Automations – Design expressive swells and dynamic phrasing using detailed automation for pads, textures, and transitions.

• Pentatonic Fills – Spice up your melodies and fills with pentatonic runs and motifs that complement Botanica’s dreamy vibe.

Included with the session is the Botanica project from class. Follow along, remix, make it your own, and save all the tools used in the workshop. (This project requires Ableton Suite 12.2 or newer, all other racks and presets will work with 12.0 or newer)
