Ableton 101 - Drum Programming Overview
This beginner friendly workshop aimed at helping you understand rhythmic theory and demystifying drum programming within Ableton Live.
1. Understanding Rhythm Theory (Time Signature & Note Divisions): Although we will use mostly 4/4 for the workshop. We explore the essential theory behind rhythm, including time signatures and note divisions, while listening to modern music examples.
2. Using Loops: We first start with a few examples of using loops for our drums which will allow us to focus more on songwriting, sound design, arrangement or any other area we want to focus on.
3. Programming Drums in MIDI: Understanding the power of MIDI in drum programming for sampled drums (styles like: Hip-Hop, RnB, EDM, Bass Music, Pop, Reggaeton, Afrobeat, Amapiano etc.) and acoustic multi-sampled drums (for styles like: Jazz, Fusion, Rock, Pop, OG Afrobeat etc. ).
4. Exploring Different Styles of Drums: We'll explore various modern rhythms from different music cultures.
5. Analyzing Rhythms From Our Favorite Tracks: We'll share a workflow method to allow us to easily learn rhythms from our favorites songs and tracks.
6. Groove Engine: Exploring Ableton Live's groove engine and its capabilities in enhancing and manipulating the feel of drum patterns, or creating new grooves out of simple MIDI clips.
This workshop serves as a comprehensive guide, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to create professional-level drum sequences, encouraging experimentation, and fostering a deeper understanding of rhythm in music production.
Drum Programming Ableton Project
Included in this session is an Ableton Project with 9 different styles. Each track is loaded up with a custom Drum Rack kit and a custom Channel Strip Effect Rack.
A great way to learn from example, please use the scenes to lunch the beats as each beat has a different BPM.
