IDM/Braindance Overview

In this session we explore the secrets of IDM production. Learn the techniques that define this experimental underground style and create complex, evolving tracks with experimental feel and sound design.

Topics covered include:

• How to IDM/Braindance: Understand the roots and evolution of the style.
• Glitch Drum Techniques: Craft intricate, glitchy rhythms.
• Break Sequencing: Manipulate and sequence breaks like a pro.
• Generative Sequencing: Explore creative, algorithmic approaches to composition.
• IDM Chord Progressions: Write introspective and emotional harmonies and melodies.
• Tape Aesthetics: Add warmth and character with tape-like textures.
• Sound Morphing: Transform and reshape sounds dynamically.
• FX Sequencing: Sequence effects for intricate, evolving soundscapes.
• How To Be Weird: Embrace unconventional ideas and push boundaries.

This workshop is perfect for producers of all levels. Ableton Projects, sample packs, and presets are included to help you get started.

 

IDM Project from Class

An arranged IDM project we made in in class. Tracks with plugins and 3rd party Max for Live devices (all free) are frozen.

Don't forget to save your favorite instruments and effects to your user library!

 

Glitch Drums Project

Another Ableton Project to explore, In this one we're using extreme randomization techniques to create creative chaos for glitch drums.

 

Autechre Max for Live Instrument

Original patch directly from the mastermind of Autechre turned into a Max for Live device so you can use it in your Ableton Projects.

 

IDM Keys

A versatile instruments with 5 sound variations (in class we're using the free Smooth Automator to morph between the variations) for a melancholy introspective IDM chord progressions.

 

Sherman Goldman

A glitchy pluck instrument, great for arps/riffs and sequences. In class, we used the SQ Sequencer from the new Sequencer pack to create a glitchy sparkly background to our chords.

 

Morphing Lead

5 different lead sounds (all from Side Brain's Preset Packs) stacked into a morphing lead sound and randomly selected using an LFO.

If you like the sounds don't forget to save each one to your User Library.

 

B Bass

A fat, analog style bass sound.

 

Effectrix at Home

An FX sequencer (a-la Effectrix, Looperator, Infiltrator, etc.) made with the free Octoseq Modulator, Reverser and Ableton Built-in FX.

 

Break Bus Driver Rack

An exclusive Audio Effect Rack you can use on all your breakbeats tracks and/or Drum groups.

This rack combines saturations, compression, short reverbs, rhythmic delays and transient shaping.

This rack will make your drums sounds fatter and fuller.

Macros:

Drive – Waveshaping distortion from the Drum Buss

Crunch – Mid/High Distortion

GAINNN – Controls the makeup gain of the Glue Compressor before the last stage of Soft and Hard Clipping

Saturate – Analog Drive before final clipping

Room Space – Drums Plate reverb

Groove Echo – Syncopated 1/4 notes for added groove

Tilt Filter – Tilt EQ to adjust the balance of the highs and lows

Comp – Last compressor stage

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Yeuda Ben-Atar, a world renowned Ableton Certified Trainer, hails from Los Angeles, California. Originally from Israel, Yeuda’s passion for music led him to the United States, where he discovered his true calling with Ableton Live in 2007, embarking on a journey of mastery.

He approaches Ableton in a unique way; producing and performing with video game controllers under the moniker Side Brain.

One of Yeuda’s most remarkable qualities is his exceptional knowledge and speed, combined with his unparalleled ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and engaging manner.
