In this session we explored the tools and techniques to create tracks using only music samples from audio recordings.
You’ll learn practical and advanced methods for sourcing, slicing, and rearranging audio to build cohesive, story-driven tracks with a distinct sonic identity.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

• How to Plunderphonics
  Understand the philosophy and techniques behind plunderphonics, and how to use sampling as a compositional tool.

• Sourcing Samples
  Discover where and how to find unique and inspiring audio material.

• Browser Sampling in Ableton
  Learn efficient ways to collect, tag, and audition samples within Ableton’s browser for rapid creative workflow.

• Audio-Only Production
  Explore techniques for building full compositions using only audio, without relying on MIDI instruments.

• Advanced Editing Techniques
  Get deep with warping, slicing, resampling, transient editing, and custom clip manipulation to reshape your sounds.

• Finding the Key of Samples
  Learn fast and reliable methods for detecting and matching the key of samples to ensure harmonic cohesion and using the Circle of Fifths to find matching samples.

• Stem Separation Tools
  Use modern tools to isolate vocals, drums, bass and other elements from full tracks for more precise sampling.

• Juxtaposition & Narrative
  Craft emotional and thematic flow in your music through contrast, layering, and storytelling with sound and speech samples.

 

This workshop is ideal for producers, beatmakers, and sound collage artists looking to push the boundaries of sampling and composition within Ableton Live.

 

Plunderphonics Project Example

 

Included with the session is the Plunderphonics project example (+ another project from class). Follow along, remix, make it your own, and save all the tools used in the workshop. (This project requires Ableton Suite 12.1 or newer)

 

Circle of Fifths Max for Live Device

In this session we learn how to use the Circle of Fifths (or Camelot wheel) to transopose and match samples together. This exclusive tool will make it easy to find relative or related keys.

 

Scratching Template

We explore multiple ways on how to create authentic sounding scratching inside Ableton Live. One of the ways is using an Ableton template that includes Dummy clip srtaching with the Delay effect for pitch and Auto-Pan effect for crossfade emulation (After opening go to File -> Save Live Set as Template)

 

Break Bus Driver Audio Effect Rack

An exclusive Audio Effect Rack you can use on all your breakbeats tracks and/or Drum groups.

This rack combines saturations, compression, short reverbs, rhythmic delays and transient shaping.

This rack will make your drums sounds fatter and fuller.

Macros:

Drive – Waveshaping distortion from the Drum Buss

Crunch – Mid/High Distortion

GAINNN – Controls the makeup gain of the Glue Compressor before the last stage of Soft and Hard Clipping

Saturate – Analog Drive before final clipping

Room Space – Drums Plate reverb

Groove Echo – Syncopated 1/4 notes for added groove

Tilt Filter – Tilt EQ to adjust the balance of the highs and lows

Comp – Last compressor stage

 

MPC 60 Redux Preset

The old school sampler like the MPC 60 had limited sample rate and bit rate. This preset will get you that gritty lo-fi sound associated with the legendary MPC 60

 

Beefy master

Using the free LiveCrusher (Camel Crusher Clone) with Ableton's built-in Roar and Limiter to create a beefy master output for a fat mixdown.
