Ableton Live 12 comes packed with a lot of new features. One of them is an incredible Macro Synthesizer called Meld.

In this guide, we’ll explore sound design concepts, tips and tricks for this synth.

Serial Drive

Meld is a bi-timbral synth. Meaning that it features 2 identical layers that we can combine in all sorts of ways. The only thing that connect the two layers are cross-modulation and the global summing drive circuit. This dynamic analog style drive will help glue the two layers together and bring out different characteristic out of the sound.

Since most filters have an additional Drive built-in we can achieve serial saturation/distortion effects with great results.

Check out presets: A Bass, B Bass and Harmonic Nas for examples of serial drive.

Try to turn down the drive amount to hear the big different in sound.

Sweet Spot

Since Meld is a Macro Synthesizer inspired by the modular world, it features many different complex synths engines that are being controlled by only 2 macro controls. This allows for a huge variety of sounds and tones with only two controls and even the finest change to one macro control can create a big difference in sound.

Special FX

There are a few synth engines that can act as special FX. Like the Shepherd’s Pie that can give us an ever rising or ever falling tone. Or the Bitgrunge reminiscing of old Internet modems or the Crackle, Rain and Bubble engines to provide noise textures.

There are also some filters that act as effects like the Phaser, EQ Boost and the resonators.

Pattern Generator

Meld’s LFO Section is extremely powerful thanks to it’s different modes and wave shaping FX.

One of the modes is Euclid, which can act as an endless pattern generator especially when we use it to modulate things like filter and volume.

This can be even more customizable if we modulate the controls of the Euclid with LFO 2 (utility LFO).

Check out the preset EDE for an Example.

Speard Everything

Meld’s spread control allows us to do much more then a unison effect. In Meld, spread is another modulation source. That means that we can apply variation to any modulated parameter between different notes or when using stack.

LAYERING

Thanks to Meld’s extensive modulation and complex synth engines we are able to make deep and huge-sounding one-note patches by layering multiple instances of Meld with different parts.
