Future Garage Overview

This workshop delves into the murky depths of Future Garage, teaching you how to craft atmospheric soundscapes, hollow vocal chopping and off grid garage inspired grooves reminiscent of Burial's work.

• How to Future Garage (Burial): We'll break down the key elements that define Future Garage as a whole and then dive deeper into Burial's unique sound. You'll learn how to build the foundation for your own Future Garage tracks.
• Off Grid Drum Programming: Ditch the quantize button! This section explores the art of programming non-quantized, swinging drum grooves that breathe life into your beats while giving you complete freedom on your musical timing.
• Accents & Displacements: We'll explore moving our main snares/claps/rimshots sound to build more intricate rhythms that are so popular in this style.
• Dark Chord Progressions: Using basic music theory knowledge we explore how to create a dark chord progressions.
• Vocal Sampling, Chopping & Sound Design: How to match the key, slice, warp, and process vocal samples to create an ethereal hollow vibe.
• Field Recordings/Foley Percussion: Learn how to incorporate field recordings and found sounds, like vinyl crackle or Foley effects, to add a sense of realism and atmosphere to your tracks. Explore agressive EQing techniques to create signature drum sounds.
• Ghost Textures: We'll explore how to create shimmering, ghostly textures using pads, reverbs, and delays. These elements can add depth and mystery to your soundscapes.
• Future Garage Arrangement: This crucial section dives into the art of arranging a Future Garage track. You'll learn how to build tension and release, create evolving soundscapes, and structure your song for maximum impact with automation.

By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the tools, skills and knowledge to produce your own Future Garage tracks that capture the essence of Burial's sound.

 

Future Garage Project

Included with the video is the Ableton Project we made in class. Arranged with an intro, build and peak. This can be a great starting point to create your own future garage track.

An example of a garage track style can inspire you creatively and help you understand the genre's characteristics.

 

Pad Generator

Included in this session is a custom rack from the Ambient Techniques session. The rack produces a new chord with each note played, To use it as a regular pad sound, turn down the Autochrd On/Off macro all the way down.

 

Dark Piano Atmos

This Rack is using the included Upright Piano with octave doubling, reverb, pitch shifting and saturation to create a haunting dark sound that is so characteristic with this style

 

Future Garage Dark Reese

The dark filtered Reese bass is very common sound in Future Garage. This one is made with Ableton's Wavetable.

 

Break Bus Driver Rack

An exclusive Audio Effect Rack you can use on all your drum elements and/or Drum groups.

This rack combines saturations, compression, short reverbs, rhythmic delays and transient shaping.

This rack will make your drums sounds fatter and fuller.

Macros:

Drive – Waveshaping distortion from the Drum Buss

Crunch – Mid/High Distortion

GAINNN – Controls the makeup gain of the Glue Compressor before the last stage of Soft and Hard Clipping

Saturate – Analog Drive before final clipping

Room Space – Drums Plate reverb

Groove Echo – Syncopated 1/4 notes for added groove

Tilt Filter – Tilt EQ to adjust the balance of the highs and lows

Comp – Last compressor stage
