Ableton for Guitarists Overview
In this session, we explore everything Ableton Live have to offer guitarists, bassists and instrumentalists. From setting up your interface and pedals to building a hands-free performance rig, this workshop is designed for players who want to record, loop, and perform live using the tools of modern music production. Whether you're recording clean takes, layering textures with effects, or building live looping rigs with dummy clips and MIDI foot controllers, this session shows how Ableton can become your ultimate guitar pedalboard, looper, and recording/performing software.
What You’ll Learn
How to Ableton for Guitarists: Build your guitar rig inside Ableton—from tone shaping to creative routing.
Choosing Audio Interfaces: Pick the right interface for low-latency tracking and clean guitar input.
Incorporating Hardware Pedals: Route and resample your pedals into Live and blend analog gear with digital tools.
Minimizing Latency: Optimize your buffer settings and routing for real-time performance.
Dummy Clips: Use dummy clips for effect switching, automation, and creative live setups.
Hands-Free Live Looping: Build a live looping rig that works seamlessly with your playing style.
MIDI Foot Controllers & MIDI Guitars: Map foot switches and MIDI pickups for complete stage control.
This workshop is designed for both beginners and advanced users.
Guitar Live Looping Template
This live looping template allows you to record each looping layer in a different track (with or without the effects printed) which allows for complete control during and after the performance/improvisation section. You can continue and duplicating more looping tracks as many as you'd like. Add any effect on the main Guitar channel (to be printed to the recording) or add effects on the looping track individually (will not be printed with the effects).
To use the template simply map the Track Launch buttons to your MIDI controller or keyboard.
Guitar Master Board
The Guitar Master Board is a massive collection of all the tools and effects we might need to get endless variations of guitar tones using only Ableton native effects and free Max for Live devices.
This rack is using Macro Variations to switch between all the different effects. Here is a breakdown of the signal chain
Main Rack/Tuner - switch between the main guitar rack to a muted tuner
Pre-Amp - balanced pre-amp control, turn down for a clean tone turn up for a distorted tone
Amp Combo - Using Ableton's Pedal, Amp and Cabinet to change the tone from Clean, Overdrive, Distortion and Fuzz
Modulation Effects - Add modulation effects before the Amp chain - Chorus, Phaser, Wah Wah, Flanger, Tremolo, Vibrato
Creative FX - Add Creative FX after the Amp chain - Octaver, Grain Delay, Vintage, Ambient, Reverse Delay, Bit Crusher
Guitar Delays - Widner, Slapback, Ping Pong, Space Echo
Reverb - Room, Spring, Plate, Hall, Shimmer
Post Gain - Connected to the Pre-Amp control for balance volume/tone control
Compression - Master rack compressor
Gate Noise Suppression - Final gate to eliminate any amp noise when not playing
Looper State Display
An exclusive Max for Live device (originally built for Flying Lotus but now available to the public) which can display the state of the Looper audio effect in a pop up screen.
Simply load the Looper State Display device and map it to the Looper effect.
